At Home Oral Hygiene Guide
Brushing
Brushing properly is just as important as brushing twice a day. Using the right technique helps remove plaque, protect your gums, and prevent cavities.
Step-by-Step Proper Brushing Technique
1. Start at the Gum Line
Position your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle where your gums and teeth meet. Using gentle, circular motions, clean the outer surfaces of each tooth. Apply light pressure — enough to allow the bristles to reach between teeth, but not so much that it causes discomfort. Sweep the brush toward the biting surface to remove loosened plaque.
2. Clean the Inside Surfaces
Use the same circular motion to clean the inside of your back teeth.
3. Brush the Front Teeth Vertically
Hold the toothbrush vertically to clean the inside of your upper and lower front teeth. Use gentle up-and-down strokes and don’t forget to brush along the gum line.
4. Clean the Chewing Surfaces
Use short, gentle strokes to brush the biting surfaces of your teeth. Adjust the angle of your brush as needed to reach all areas.
Take your time and check in the mirror to ensure you’re cleaning every surface. When finished, rinse thoroughly to wash away loosened plaque.
If you experience pain while brushing, bleeding gums, or have questions about your brushing technique, the team at Mountain Dental is here to help.
Are You Flossing the Right Way?
Gum disease starts at the gum line and between teeth — areas your toothbrush can’t fully clean. That’s why daily flossing is essential for preventing gingivitis and protecting your long-term oral health.
But flossing only works if you do it correctly.
Proper Flossing in 4 Easy Steps:
Wind: Wrap about 18 inches of floss around your middle fingers, leaving 1–2 inches to work with.
Guide: Gently guide the floss between teeth using a careful back-and-forth motion.
Glide: Curve the floss into a “C” shape around each tooth.
Slide: Move the floss up and down against the tooth surface and slightly under the gum line. Use a clean section for each tooth.
Be sure to floss every tooth — even the very back molars — and along spaces where teeth are missing.
At Mountain Dental, we believe prevention is the key to a healthy smile. If you’re experiencing bleeding gums, bad breath, or sensitivity, it may be time for a dental exam.
